    WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS Playlist for March 27, 2011

    WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS
    Playlist for March 27, 2011
    HOST: Ron Olesko

Today's show featured a 100th anniversary remembrance of the Triangle
Shirtwaist Factory fire. You might scratch your head when you see the
old-time music hall song "Every Little Movement Has a Meaning Of It's Own"
(a song written in 1910) included in the segment, but there were reports
that a group of the young girls were singing the song as they were getting
ready to leave work at the time the fire broke out. The last song that many
of them would hear or sing. Although today's show aired two days after the
actual anniversary, I chose to air the segment beginning at 4:45pm, the time
    the first alarms were sounded.

Keeping up with the news headlines, I aired a segment of songs that deal
with the dangers of nuclear power and weapons.

Segments like these always remind me of the power of folk music in capturing
the history of our community as sharing news and provoking thought.

A number of recently released recordings were featured today. New and
noteworthy - Spuyten Duyvel "New Amsterdam", Joe Crookston "Darling & The
Bluebird Jubilee", and a tribute CD called "Long Gone: Utah Remembers Bruce
'Utah' Phillips" - a collection produced by the late folksinger's son Duncan
Phillips and featuring a number of Utah based artists.

Also, a sneak preview of a concert featuring James Keelaghan taking place at
the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club in Fair Lawn, New Jersey next Saturday,
April 2. I am also president of the Hurdy Gurdy -
